Quartz Composer

Finally – one of the coolest video apps for the Mac, Pixelshox, is back! It’s now called Quartz Composer, and it comes with OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

If you have Tiger – go ahead and load it up now. You can find it in /Developer/Applications/Graphics Tools/. If you don’t have a “Developer” folder on your hard drive, then you’ll need to install the Developer Tools from the Install DVD.

It’s like legos for video processing – patch together the bits you want, and out comes beauty. It has grown much since its Pixelshox beta days, with new iteration functions, macro patches, pixel-shader objects, rss reading-capabilities, and the best part – creation of MOV files that can be read by Quicktime-aware apps with interactive bits intact.

For example, this Basic Video In movie will bring video-in functionalities to quicktime-compatible programs that wouldn’t otherwise support it.

For full info on Quartz Composer, check out the Apple Developer’s Guide.

I’ll be posting my experiments, as I finish them, both here at the Lava Flow and on the new tinker: video site.
