Experiments In Sound - The Ultimate Mix Contest

The Largest VJ Contest Prize Package In History

Experiments in Sound, Futuremusic’s revolutionary new music contest is the first to showcase the transformation of DJ technology utilizing non-performance based mixing tools. Previously, Futuremusic has been recognized as presenting the incredible, performance-based DJ contest, The Next Big Thing. Experiments in Sound, its latest venture, will be the first contest to accept an all-inclusive array of DJ mixes, including both traditional performance-based mixing, as well as computer-aided compilations.

Experiments in Sound’s innovative founder, Dan Brotman, is excited about the contest’s cutting-edge requirements, “Experiments In Sound is about what would happen if you gave a DJ total creative freedom to craft a 60 minute mix without any restrictive rules. It's the first non-performance based mix contest that will allow DJs to achieve their mixes via turntables, CDs, Serato digital vinyl, computers, hardware controllers, musical instruments...any way they want and in any genre they choose. In addition, Experiments is the first contest that will accept mixes in 5.1 surround sound."

Completing their radical vision in Experiments in Sound, Futuremusic is also recognizing VJ’s. Included in the contest is a separate mix category for music oriented video artists. The VJ prize package consists of the ground-breaking Pioneer DVD Turntable, the DVJ-X1, Sony's top-of-the-line video production software, Vegas, Arkaos VJ performance software, a M-Audio Trigger Finger controller and then some!

The 2 Grand Prize offerings will have the biggest DJ/VJ prize package ever assembled. The DJ package includes an Alienware computer workstation, Sony's renowned Acid Pro 5 and Sound Forge 8, Serato Scratch Live, Native Instruments Komplete2, and a great deal more. In addition, both winners will also qualify to mix a special DualDisc release, DVD on one side and CD on the other, for Futuremusic's new 3xperiments 1n 5ound compilation series.

The winner(s) of Experiments in Sound will be chosen by a panel of industry veterans and performers scoring in 4 main categories: Mixing, Creativity, Programming and Quality.

21st - 8pm
28th - 8pm

So what is this show all about?
"Guide to Modern Living" is a completely improvised, live educational show. Each show uses live video mixing, green screen, remote cameras, computer animation and stage scenes to explore every facet of an audience suggested topic. If you were to take an educational film, force it into a shotgun marriage with an infomercial, take the resulting offspring and genetically combine them with an independent film, force them to grow up watching only 3-2-1 Contact and Square One, then make them perform improv comedy, this would be the result. Its like that. Come get educated!

SUMMARY:VJS wanted for Halloween Art Show, Featuring Cirrus!
URL;VALUE=URI:http://flow.la-va.org/?p=76
DESCRIPTION:Halloween art show/fundraiser in Santa Monica at 18th St. Arts Complex on
Saturday, October 29 - http://www.18thstreet.org/nightoftheliving.html - from
8:00PM - 2:00AM - The show will be featuring the electronica band Cirrus
www.cirruscirrus.com and we're looking for a rad VJ to accompany them. Signed to the legendary Moonshine dance label, Cirrus has released several hit dance tracks including “Future,” “Drop the Break,” “Hit the Decks,” and many others. They have recently remixed songs for the likes of 311 and Paul Van Dyke, and have themselves been remixed by names like DJ Dan, AK1200, Dave Ralph, Mark Lewis, Deepsky and many more. The Cirrus appearance will draw not only their fans, but certainly fans of Moonshine Music and electronic music overall.

The show will take place on a 1.5 acre complex - Cirrus will
be performing live on an outdoor stage with the projections - there will
also be 2 galleries with artwork, plus indoor/outdoor installations and a
fire/trapeze act from Burning Man called The Clan Destino. We will also
have an after hours room with DJs from KXLU - we may also have VJs there,
too.

SUMMARY:iotaCenter Screening at UCLA - Feb 28th
URL;VALUE=URI:http://flow.la-va.org/?p=167
DESCRIPTION:Abstraction and Visual Music:
Contemporary Animation from Los Angeles Artists

When: February 28th at 7:30 pm
Where: The James Bridges Theatre (Melnitz 1409) on the UCLA Campus in Westwood, CA

The burgeoning VJ scene has recently made live performance of Visual Music extremely common. However, artists have long explored Abstraction and Visual Music using the techniques of film animation, video synthesis, and computer graphics.
Los Angeles, although known for mainstream Hollywood media, is also home to a thriving community of independent animation artists. The iotaCenter presents a survey of recent and historical works by LA-based artists, including J. Walt Adamczyk, Adam Beckett, Mar Elepano, Jim Ellis, Jules Engel, Mondi, Michael Scroggins, Kathy Smith, and Vibeke Sorensen.
An artists' panel discussion will follow the screening. Come join us for this exciting community event.

SUMMARY:Quartz Composer Classes
URL;VALUE=URI:http://flow.la-va.org/?p=243
DESCRIPTION:I'll be teaching two Quartz Composer classes at Machine Project in December. Classes are limited to 10 people, so head on over to the class info page and reserve your space!

Quartz Composer - Make your own interactive audio/video tools
Instructor Surya Buchwald. Dec 10th and 17th 12-4pm
$115, limited to 10 people

Materials needed: Mac laptop running OS X 10.4 or newer with Developer Tools installed.

Quartz Composer is is a development tool provided with Mac OS X v10.4 for processing and rendering graphical data. In the words of Apple…
Quartz Composer is a groundbreaking graphics development environment that allows you to explore the incredible power of the graphics stack of Mac OS X Tiger. With Quartz Composer, you can easily combine the capabilities of Cocoa, Quartz 2D, Core Image, OpenGL, and QuickTime, all using an approachable visual programming paradigm. Use Quartz Composer to prototype Core Image filters, build engaging screen savers, create custom user-interface widgets, make data-driven visual effects, and even perform live performance animations

We think it’s neat and easy, and besides it comes free with the Mac OS. We’ll begin by modifying existing programs, and then proceed to creating our own awesome sound and video control pieces. The first meeting will be an intensive tutorial, the second meeting will be assisted work on independent projects based on what we learn in the first meeting.

Hope you can make it! BTW - I've never gone by the name 'VJ Surya' before, but it somehow made its way into all the press material surrounding the show, so I may have to adopt it :)
